The Canal & River Trust – annual heritage report

Editor News

The Canal & River Trust is the guardian of 2,000 miles of historic waterways across England and Wales, caring for the nation’s third-largest collection of listed structures, as well as museums, archives, and hundreds of important wildlife sites. The Trust has published its annual Heritage Report for 2016/2017. This is a retrospective report that summarises and reflects upon the Trust’s activities in safeguarding the heritage assets of its inland waterways.

The Trust is responsible for 2,701 listed buildings, 49 scheduled monuments and 350 conservation areas. This is in addition to thousands of other non-designated but historic buildings, structures and earthworks. Other heritage designations that touch the Trust’s waterways include five World Heritage Sites, 42 historic parks and gardens and nine historic battlefields. 2016/2017 was a good year for the Trust’s heritage work and the latest report highlights a number of case studies covering repairs, archaeology, engagement with local communities and other groups, volunteers, property development, skills and training and Heritage at Risk.
