Government departments publish departmental plans

The single departmental plan sets out DCMS’ objectives and how it will achieve them. This includes:

1.7 Use the Government Art Collection to promote the best of our arts, heritage and culture

4.8 Promote and protect the historic environment so that future generations can appreciate and enjoy heritage assets

  • Protect our historic built environment through the statutory protection system
  • Sponsor World Heritage Sites in the UK, using them to promote tourism and soft power
  • Deliver sustainable development and management in the heritage sector

DEFRA’s plan happily also mentions heritage as one of its objectives at 2.6 is ‘Enhance beauty, heritage and engagement with the natural environment’.

Sadly the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government plan does not mention heritage or listed buildings but does say that ‘MHCLG will support the delivery of a million homes by the end of 2020 and half a million more by the end of 2022 and put us on track to deliver 300,000 net additional homes a year on average’. This will be achieved by delivering ‘the reforms proposed in our Housing White Paper and at Autumn Budget to ensure the planning system supports our housing supply objectives’.
