CIfA briefing on NPPF and ‘good planning’ position statement

The Chartered Institute for Archaeologists [Alliance Member] has produced a briefing on the weakening of archaeology provisions in the proposed revised National Planning Policy Framework, which is currently being consulted on by MHCLG. You can download the briefing here.

The briefing highlights a number of changes to the balance between environment protection and development, as well as general change in tone and content which the Institute feels implies that archaeology and the historic environment should be afforded less weight in decision-making, or makes it less obvious.

The Institute has also recently published a ‘good planning’ position statement, which sets out the core principles of CIfA advocacy for sustainable planning, environmental protection, place-making, and the maximisation of public benefit as a result of archaeological work.
