Consultation on the Fisheries white paper: ‘Sustainable fisheries for future generations’

Editor News

DEFRA is consulting on its Fisheries white paper, which lays out their vision for the marine environment and the fishing industry post-Brexit. Heritage is conspicuous by its absence in the paper, so the consultation provides an opportunity to promote its importance.

Of interest from a heritage perspective are question 14, which asks for comments on the proposed approach to protecting the marine environment in relation to fisheries, and question 16, which asks for any further comments in relation to the paper’s discussion of sustainable management of the marine and coastal environments. Question 17, which asks what the priorities ought to be for any future funding for the sector or coastal communities, also provides an opportunity to flag the importance of heritage to the make up of coastal communities and the marine environment.

The consultation closes on the 12th September.
