Anger over plan to move Pankhurst statue away from Parliament

The Guardian has reported that a planning  application to relocate a statue of suffragette Emmeline Pankhurst from its site near the Houses of Parliament to the private Regent’s University in Regent’s Park has been met with anger and condemnation.

The proposal was submitted to Westminster Council from the Emmeline Pankhurst Trust, a non-profit group led by former Conservative MP Sir Neil Thorne.

The main criticism is that the relocation – given the historical and cultural significance of the statue’s current location – would reduce its importance and during the centenary of women’s suffrage in the UK.
