Final report of the ‘21st Century Challenges for Archaeology’ published

Editor News

The final project report from the 21st Century Challenges for Archaeology workshops has been published. The project, which was funded by Historic England and run by CIfA [Alliance member], comprised six workshops, which were attended by experts from across the UK historic environment sector, and ran in 2017. Each workshop focussed on a single ‘challenge’, with discussion ranging across the legislative and policy framework for archaeology, the methods of public sector service delivery nationally and locally, the standards and guidance that underpin archaeological work, and key aspects of the archaeological process.

This final report summarises the project, collates recommendations and outputs from the 6 workshop reports, and considers overarching themes and implementation. Appendices contain a review of the 2011 Southport Report’s recommendations and updated context, the background papers for each workshop, and a transcript of online discussion.
