How will climate change in the next 100 years?

It is increasingly recognised that the climate is changing and this will have impacts on heritage conservation. Predicting the possible scenarios is extremely useful to help heritage specialists plan future conservation strategies.

On 26 November the Environment Secretary Michael Gove launched the UK climate projections (UKCP18) for the next century, which explores the effects of different scenarios. Indeed, as Michael Gove stated “Climate change will affect everybody. UKCP18 is designed to help everybody make better decisions”.

The worst case scenario shows increased temperatures both in Summer and in Winter, raised sea levels and altered precipitation frequencies.

Planning preventive conservation measures will increase the resilience of cultural heritage to survive for future generations. The Heritage Alliance published a briefing about Climate change mitigation on July 2014, asking the Government to recognise the carbon benefits of retaining and adapting older buildings.
