£30 million competition to help rural Britain utilise 5G

The Digital Secretary Nicky Morgan has launched a competition to test the applications of 5G technology in rural areas. Up to ten rural locations will be chosen to run innovative trials of 5G applications and stimulate commercial investment in 5G technology.

The Digital Secretary said: ‘’We’re investing millions so the whole country can grasp the opportunities and economic benefits of next generation 5G technology.’’

In 2017 DCMS set up the 5G Testbeds and trials Programme to encourage and fund the creation of a series of Testbeds and Trials in a range of geographic and vertical market segments.

The Rural Connected Communities competition will fund up to ten 5G research and development projects to run over the course of two years.
