Proposed law changes to render charities liable if they fail to protect their volunteers

Editor News

The Government has opened a consultation on sexual harassment in the workplace which proposes to make charities responsible for protecting their volunteers from harassment.

The Equality Act 2010 states that employers are legally responsible if an employee is sexually harassed at work by another employee and the employer has not taken steps to prevent this.

The proposed law changes raise questions about the line between volunteering and work and would allow volunteers to take charities to employment tribunals.

The consultation is open until 2 October.
