Upcoming changes to the Treasure Act 1996 will see artefacts defined as treasure ‘if they are of historical or cultural significance’. The current definition is based on the common law of treasure trove, which dates back to the medieval period and is based on the precious-metal content of the artefacts. The new definition will help recognise important findings made by the public and ensure that they are preserved in public collections.
