The Heritage Alliance’s CEO Lizzie Glithero West was delighted to attend a service at St Pauls to mark the 200th anniversary of the Incorporated Church Building Society (ICBS ) which in 2013 became part of the National Churches Trust [Alliance members]. The ICBS was set up to help ‘keep England holy’ as by 1815 only around half the population belonged to the church of England. It also provided thousands of free pews in contrast to the custom of paid pews. Together with the Church Building Commission the ICBS ushered in an unprecedented era of Anglican church building.
