Charity Shops at Risk Due to ‘£2.2m’ Waste Charge

The Charity Retail Association has shared its fears about the future of several of its members’ charity shops in the Greater Manchester area, following the Greater Manchester Combined Authority’s recent move to severely restrict free charity tipping.

Charity shops in Greater Manchester could now be made to pay an extra £2.2m a year in charges for not disposing of unsold items when the local authority introduces its proposed new measure next month.

A GMCA spokesperson added: “I would urge charities who are concerned about the amendments to the terms and conditions to contact the waste and resources team directly as we fully support the important work they do in giving household waste a new purpose through the charity shop sales.”
