Guidelines for evaluating and recording England’s former gasworks and redundant gasholders

Editor News

This Historic England’s publication outlines a framework for evaluating and recording former gasworks sites and gas industry heritage. It details a variety of approaches and good practice designed to collectively evaluate significance and to produce a lasting record.

These guidelines are aimed at a wide audience including the national gas networks, owners, developers, local authorities and industrial historians and archaeologists.

The draft guidance is accompanied by a set of images.

Historic England welcomes comments on:

  • the appropriateness of the levels and methods of recording proposed
  • any issues of feasibility within the context of former gasworks sites
  • any inaccuracies

Suggested examples of good recording practice of gasworks or gasholders would also be well received.

This consultation will be open until Friday 21 June 2019. Please send responses to matthew.bristow@HistoricEngland.org.uk
