Historic England has recently commissioned a review and update of its ‘Heritage Crime Prevention Guidance’ and ‘Heritage Crime: Risk Assessment Tool’ to be undertaken by Andy Bliss of Aldwic Research Consultancy Ltd. A former senior police officer and lead for the National Police Chiefs’ Council on Heritage Crime, he has a recent postgraduate degree in Archaeology and a particular expertise in crime risk management and tackling heritage crime.
Reducing the effects of crime on the nation’s heritage assets and the historic environment are a vital element of heritage protection. Changes in legislation as well as significant changes in crime trends and the way that criminals operate mean that the guidance now needs to be brought up-to-date. This is to ensure that it is as accessible, accurate and as useful as possible for those who need to refer to it – whether professionals or members of the public with limited knowledge of heritage protection.
