The Heritage2020 Capacity Building working group is delighted that Iceni Projects will work with the group to update the existing list of statutory duties imposed by Government on Local Authorities in relation to heritage. The Heritage and Townscape team at Iceni Projects will be leading the research and combined they have a vast experience of advising on heritage regeneration and conservation projects, as well as experience of working within local authorities to ensure sustained usage of historic buildings. The team is therefore extremely well informed on the legislation and policy frameworks which local authorities must adhere to when approaching heritage projects and maintaining sites and commented: “The last decade has seen several key legislative and policy modifications that has put more strain on the local authority’s duties, especially with regards to heritage expertise. Iceni Projects are pleased to assist Heritage 2020 on this project and hope to generate awareness about the significance of having and retaining in-house heritage expertise within Councils.”

The work to update the list of statutory duties involves a review of the list of legal duties placed on local authorities that was compiled by DCLG in 2011. The updated list will be used by Heritage 2020 and the Capacity Building working group as part of its work to identify a sustainable model or network for the provision of local authority conservation and archaeology expertise to developers and communities.
