The Heritage Alliance is seeking a part-time Policy Officer to join our small advocacy team at an exciting time for the sector. The role will support with all elements of our research, policy development and political engagement. This 6-month role would be ideally suited to someone looking to gain experience in the heritage sector who has a keen interest in the UK policy and political landscape.

- Hours per week: 17.5 hours (0.5 FTE/2.5 days per week)

Role Description
The Heritage Alliance is the national umbrella body for heritage, a charity with over 200 organisational members. We are seeking a part time Policy Officer to join our small team for a fixed term in 2025. This is an exciting and wide-ranging role, requiring a dynamic, proactive and reliable individual.
The role presents an ideal opportunity for someone looking to develop skills in policy research and development, political communications, and parliamentary monitoring. The role gives an opportunity to work with a small team to build expertise in a diverse range of policy areas including planning, education and skills, funding, and net zero. Key priorities for 2025 include advocating for heritage through the Planning and Infrastructure Bill, promoting our new creative industries report, and strengthening our relationships with the new government.
Applicants should be persuasive writers and communicators, have a passion for advocacy and policy, strong analytical skills, and the ability to deliver at pace. Whilst a demonstrable interest in heritage is important, direct experience is not essential.
The closing date for applications is 26th February with interviews shortly afterwards. The starting date for the new role would ideally be mid-March. This role is part-time (0.5 FTE) and currently offered on a 6-month contract (March- September 2025).
Key Responsibilities:
- Researching across a wide range of policy briefs affecting the Alliance’s members;
- Drafting letters, briefings and consultation responses for government and parliament as needed;
- Co-ordinating, minuting and actioning the work of the Alliance’s Advocacy and Working Groups in liaison with their Chairs;
- Monitoring parliamentary activity for heritage-related developments in both houses and in select committees;
- Occasional support of the Heritage Alliance’s communications products, including producing copy and reporting on government news and policy developments for our newsletters.
Key Experience:
- Experience of gathering evidence, researching and analysing complex issues
- Experience of sythesising information to create clear, concise and accurate reports/briefings
- Experience in producing persuasive external communications for different audiences
- Desirable: Experience in coordinating meetings/networks, including minuting and agenda-setting
- Desirable: Experience of heritage or cultural organisations
Skills, Abilities and Knowledge:
- An interest in heritage policy, government and political affairs, and the desire to learn more
- The ability to write clearly and concisely for a wide range of purposes
- Excellent time management, able to take on a wide range of tasks and prioritise delivery in a fast-changing environment
- A positive team-player mentality, able to work in a small team and support colleagues.
