In a summit hosted by Sadiq Khan, Mayor of London, on Monday the 22nd July, the National Park City Foundation declared that London has become the first capital city in the worlds to be awarded the status of a National Park City thanks to its open spaces, waterways and natural environment.

A Charter was developed by the National Park City Foundation for the summit, and which was signed by the Mayor. The charter set out key actions to make London a city where people, places and nature are better connected and matches the long term goals in the Mayor’s Environment strategy.

In celebration, a week of 300 free ‘National Park City Festival’ events are taking place across London, whilst the Mayor is prioritising making transforming the city by making more than half of it green.

Sadiq Khan has already been working on ‘greening’ the city and has helped fund the planting of over 170,000 trees over the past three years, and 200 green space improvement projects.
