NCVO warns of barriers to diversity in the charity sector

The NCVO report ‘Planning for Tomorrow’s Workforce: Understanding skills and skills gaps in the sector’ has revealed information about diversity within the charity sector.

Charities are putting emphasis on staff having advanced qualifications: over half of the voluntary workforce is educated to a degree level and over 70% of voluntary organisations ask for applicants to have relevant work experience.

NCVO’s report found that employers could be excluding candidates from backgrounds where people face barriers to higher education or are less able to gain experience through volunteering and unpaid internships. This is likely to affect people from less advantaged socio-economic backgrounds and disabled people.
