Theresa May set out her vision for ‘the shared society’ and the government’s role within at the Charity Commission’s AGM.
In her speech the Prime Minister set out her new agenda of social reform and stated that, among other things it ‘means creating an environment in which our charities and social enterprises can thrive’ and ‘not being ambivalent about the efforts of all those who give their time, money and expertise in the service of others; but recognising, supporting and championing those who lead the way in shaping a civil society’.
In a speech William Shawcross, the chairman of the Charities Commission, stated that he was ‘convinced that agreeing some form of contribution from charities is the only way to secure adequate long term funding for the Commission’. A consultation is expected soon.

The Charities Commission has also reminded charities with a last reported income over £250,000 and a financial year ending 31 March 2016 to file their accounts or annual return in advance of the 31 January deadline.
Trustees are legally obliged to submit these documents. Failing to file, or filing late, can affect your charity’s reputation and jeopardise public trust in charities. The commission takes failure to file very seriously and will take action where necessary. Find out more.
