Stephenson’s Rocket in the North

Stephenson’s Rocket, built in Newcastle in 1829 and now part of the Science Museum Group’s Collection, returned to its home city this summer for the first time in over 150 years.

The Rocket will now go on display at Manchester’s Museum of Science and Industry, before being put on long-term display at the National Railway Museum in York.

The move has been welcomed as ‘fantastic news’ by the new Culture Secretary, Jeremy Wright, who said ‘It is right that our great art and culture reaches all parts of the country’.
