The Charity Commission for England and Wales updated Chapter 5 of its guidance ‘Protecting charities from harm’, which deals with hosting or holding events at their premises, using speakers at events or distributing literature. Stressing the importance of the freedom of speech, it however provides guidance on how to protect the charity from abuse for extremist purposes. It was reported that terrorists and those who encourage terrorism have used charities to make their views known. Trustees have to be aware of these risks in order to mitigate them in the best possible way.
