The National Heritage Centre for Horseracing & Sporting Art, seeks a new Chief Executive. The Centre was officially opened by HM The Queen in November 2016, following a £19 million conversion of Palace House and the accompanying former trainer’s yard and paddocks into a major tourist venue.

Comprising a museum, sporting art collection, galleries, shop, restaurant, flagship yard and arena displaying former racehorses being retrained, it is a major visitor attraction in Newmarket, attracting visitors from across the UK as well as internationally.
The Museum was shortlisted for the 2017 Art Fund Museum of the Year award alongside prestigious national venues such as the Tate Modern and won the 2017 Suffolk Museum of the Year award. In its first year, it attracted around 30,000 visitors, and in 2018 became an Arts Council National Portfolio Organisation.

THE ROLE

The Board wish to appoint a new chief executive to manage Palace House through the next stage of its development, and who is a clear sighted and rigorous decision maker.
Strategic direction, vision and management of Palace House

  • Development and implementation of the business plan to ensure organisational and financial sustainability
  • Development of current and future income streams, including building on the strong fundraising track record
  • Development of reputation and growth of visitor numbers regionally and nationally, to increase self-generated income streams
  • Work closely with Board of Trustees and external stakeholders
  • Strong motivational leadership of a team of around 55 staff (including full and part-time) and 100 volunteers

KEY CHARACTERISTICS:

Strong entrepreneurial and commercial skills to develop Palace House’s sustainable future

  • Demonstrable experience of financial and management accountability within a similar organisation
  • Strong leadership with excellent communication skills, and an ability to influence partners and stakeholders to achieve results, and manage and gain the respect of staff and Trustees
  • Experience in fundraising particularly with High Net Worth individuals
  • Experience in the cultural, funding and heritage tourism sectors, including making national collections relevant to the public

Salary: Up to £70,000
